Barbie Manning

• I have over 23 years of experience teaching elementary and junior high students in public, private, and homeschool settings. I am currently a Foundations in Sounds and Barton Reading and Spelling instructor.

• I graduated from Biola University with a degree in Business.

• I earned a teaching credential from the University of La Verne.

• My husband and I have been married for over 30 years and are the parents of 10 biological and adopted kids.

• I love reading, doing puzzles,  watching anything Jane Austen, working on my 45-year-old dollhouse, vacationing at our family's cabin near Sequoia, and savoring dark chocolate.

The Barton Reading and Spelling System

• Foundations in Sounds  is a precursor to the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Both are influenced by the Orton-Gillingham method and use a systematic and multi-sensory approach to reading where phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, and mastery are foundational. 

• These programs are based on years of research and evidence. Regardless of age, all Barton students begin at Level 1 and by the end of the program at Level 10, most students can read at a high-school (adult) reading level.

•  Anyone can learn to read well with this program, but it is especially designed for those who are frustrated with traditional methods or who struggle with Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Memory, and Auditory Sequencing skills.

• Several of my own children (who struggled to read in elementary school) were taught using the Barton method and their reading ability and confidence improved tremendously!

Tutoring Sessions

• Private tutoring sessions are in-person at a local library* where I work with each student in a study room or at a quiet table.                          *Local libraries include Norwalk Library, La Mirada Public Library, South Whittier Library, Whittwood Branch Library, and Brea Branch OC Library.

• Students age 6-7: one-on-one tutoring sessions at least twice a week (Mondays-Fridays) for 45 minutes each session.    Tutoring fee: $33/session

• Students age 8-17: one-on-one tutoring sessions at least twice a week (Mondays-Fridays) for 1 hour each session.            Tutoring fee: $40/session
